(AP) -American Indian Movement (AIM) member Leonard Peltier, 32, Wednesday was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murder of two FBI agents on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1975.The sentence, which had been requested by the federal prosecutor, was handed down about 4 p.m. Wednesday by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Paul Benson.Elliot Taikeff of New York, Peltier's defense attorney, already has signed a notice of intent to appeal the sentence to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.Conviction for first degree murder under federal statutes calls for the death penalty, unless the jury qualifies the judgment that there should be no capital punishment.
