Lapwai — Superintendent Theodore Sharp of the Nez Perce Indian agency has received notice of his appointment by the secretary of the interior as a member of a competency commission to determine the advancement made by Indians in civilized life. Mr. Sharp left for McAlester, Okla., where investigations are being made of the progress of the Shawnee, Sac and Fox and Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians.The purpose of this work is to withdraw the guardianship of the government from those Indians who are found able to manage their business affairs successfully. Such Indians will then be placed upon their own responsibility.
