Near Longmont, on the 21st. Bryant ; Newby, a prominent farmer, shot and probably fatally wounded Ben F. Calkins, also a farmer and a neighbor of Newby. It seems that the difficulty arose over a water controversy. Calkins was engaged in tilling a lake from the Oligarchy ditch, and was taking the water through a lateral ditch across the Newby farm. Calkins claims that Newby appropriated more than his share of the water. Newby was irrigating in the afternoon and Calkins was looking after his share of the water that was running into the lake. The men first had words in regard to the water, and then capie to blows.
