RECENT IMPROVEMENTS.Besides the Flagler road and new bridge already mentioned, are Mr. I^orillard’s marine railway and dock where he is preparing a winter headquarters for sportsmen. Then we have the New Smyrna Land and Improvement Company. This is a company of wealthy gentlemen who have recently puchased 1400 acres of the beautiful Turnbull hammock and the portion immediately joining the town on the north is laid off in streets lined with cabbage palms ten feet apart, and lots that are already being bought up as homes. These lots are beautifully shaded by live oak, hickory, cedar, cabbage palm and magnolias, and more picturesque spots for residences do not exist in Florida. One tier of these lots is on the river front, where a fine view of the river, winding among the mangrove islands, white winged sail boats and puffing steamers add l.fe to the scene. These lands were selected by Turnbull over one hundred years ago, and the crumbling walls of the old coquina houses and cellars of his colony can be seen for miles up and down the river. Mr. E. T. King, a member of this company and the manager, kindly took the editor and family on a most enjoyable drive of two miles through the hammock to what is called the “old rock house,” the coquina walls and chimney of which are still standing and cedar trees of evident age growing within the walls. This house is on the apex of a high mound which affords a beautiful view of the ocean.A similar mound is in the heart of the town and belongs to the Sheldon estate. This is the spot where Turnbull selected for his own residence, and several of his old coquina-lined wells are in the rear, one of which is still in use.
