If they did, they would have to pay each year more than Is paid to any official in this county, if they did not there would be more grumbling heard from freighters and others than him ever been heardabout paying toll-As regards the petition “largely signed” we hope “the proper authority will weigh the matter carefully.” .Look at the list ofpetitioners than at the Tax List (tor theTax-Faycrs being die parties that willhave to settle the bill are the ones really interested) mid see how many of the names are on both. We all know howeasy it is co get a petition signed for almost uny object where there is no money to be paid by the party signing—many ttifeu will make much noise about the necessity ofpublic Improvements who grumble considerably when they have to pay. They are animated a good deal by the same feelings as Mark Twain was during the war, willing that all his wife*8 rela~ lions should be sacrificed. Before this road in question was built, parties on this side of the mountain were aim os t en (i re I y cut off fro m com m t m i cation from the outside world one-half the year, the mail was brought here on the back of a man traveling on snow-shoes.— Persons receiving letters were obliged to pay one dollar for each one received. It would have been a great blessing to people on tins side the mountain had the County built a road at that time but it was not expected, nor asked for, and why? Because they knew the County was financially unable to build and keep up such a road and I think the proper authorities will come tot he same conclusion at the present time. If not, and. they think the majority of Tax-Payera want a free road and it is for the interest of the County in its present financial condition to have one, they can buy the toll road running from Baker City to Eldorado, Clarksville, Ac., for about one-half what it would cost to build one, so one of the largest stockholders in the road told me.The Editor of the Herald thinks it singular that our citizens cannot get to their County Heat on business as jurors, lt;fec., without paying for the privilege' I should think it very singular if they could have roads bUiJt and kept in order without paying for It; there is a difference in the man.ner of paying, tkat’s all. Private enterprise demands payment from those only Who use the road, whereas the County would demand payment froni every Taxpayer. One of the richest Counties in pent nil New York, in which I resided for mahyyears, had several toll roads. You wer£ obliged to pay toll on the outskirts of a city of upwards of twenty thousand inhabitants. People there were of the opinion that private enterprise would keep the road Id better order than the County probably would. There are many men of the present day who think U would be well that the County , State or Government should carry on most of the enterprises that have heretofore been carried on by Individuals or corporations, I am of a di fferent opinion.Yours, £.,ATAX-PAYEIt.enoug The c there The c laborsthat n fomia Jive o “Mjhere aelse e'\everywithinever happoii of thei to be, coura£ plenty with true, : But £ many overst men slabor, for tin need i not ag coast i got p: no otlworld. imake man ishoulcthere not h count Brow i npffcii this itBuiconskupon As mi whole at the York whichput U;Everyof themean i nimbi call inper lotof the suffer be pu gamb effortdisfejedy p backswg*A fho TlAmnnratican en hurtf our lirious the ci ereaslt;State:if so ’ Wall wbicl couni well 1bus in.©non and Ijerinto offof ihtit WQlthe pthis i nanci and i“Ho\Over:KuState; that idatedthe k One
