FIRST DROWNING IN FIVE YEARS•rs*TIT^1*'*IThe first drowning in more than five years occurred on the Iowa River in Iowa Falls Monday when Richard Lee Brannick, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Koltholf, was taken from itbout eight feet of water after being under about30 minutes. .tThe boy and his parents had moved to Iowa Falls Jxom Webster City Sunday.The accident* took place a-ibout 12:30 Monday afternoon and resulted when Brannick and an uncle, Gary Anderson, 16, of Webster City were floating on a raft in the river. According to * Anderson, Brannick attempted to change sides on the raft when it tipped dumping both ‘boys in the river.Anderson - tried repeatedly to rescue his nephew, but fright causedsthe Brannickhoy to fight his attempts.Mrs. iLeo Jorgenson, who Uyes..on. the soi b;silt;i.(?:;0f. th| river in that vicinity, phoned the police to report , a 'boy in the river and the police and Iowa Falls volunteer fire department were* on the scene in a matter of minutes.Richard Burton, Ernie Winters, Clyde Winters, and Ray Day.manned the city’s rescue hoat and pulled the youth out of the river with hooks about1 30 minutes after the accident.The fire department’s re-! suscitator and mouth-to-mouth respiration was used for about an hour in an attempt to revive the boy. Dr. D. F. Parkef1-„ was at the scene and worked -.to save the boy,« According to informed’sources it has been about five 'years since 'a drowning oc-^curred at Iowa Falls and al-*most 25 years since a child lost his life in the river. Funeral services for Richard *Lee Brannick were held -■ Thursday afternoon at theFoster Funeral Home in Webster City. Burial was in Clarion with Rev. R. Wenig officiating.The boy was born in Hamp^ton on August 10, 1949. Thus armed, we will go at the work we willdo and the living we will live.
