Lawrence, Mass., June 1 (PP) — A 3¢-year-old father was held for the grand jury in $20,000 bail to day on a charge he attempted to murder his four children while pretending to play a game with them. The action was taken against James M. Ryley to district court after he was declared sane by physicians at the Danvers State Showyital. Ryley entered a plea of in nocence. Patrolman William H. Ludwig gave the court this version of the circumstances. On the night of last April 24, Ryley went home with a box con taining seven pieces of candy. He gave each of the four chil dren one piece and told them he would then tie them to kitchen chairs—the first one to break loose would get the remaining three pieces of candy. Ludwig said,James, 13, the oldest of the children, told them that while they were tied to the chair a 1 the father turned on the gas gets on the range and a water heater. Just then, Ludwig quoted James further, the telephone rang and Ryley went to answer it. While his father talked on the telephone, James said he broke loose and ran to summon neighbors, despite his father’s attempts to stop him. All the children recovered.
