Former Member of 20th Battalion Receives Distinguished Flying CrossLt. (jg) Charles E. Brode, 20th Battalion cadet from Cumberland, Md., has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for “distinguishing himself by heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight on Dec. 15, 1944, in the Philippine sea.’The citation signed by Vice Admiral Marc A. lVIitscher stated that “during bombing and strafing attacks on an enemy destroyer he scored a direct hit on the enemy vessel, which is estimated to have been probably sunk as a result of the attack. His superb devotion to duty and his complete disregard for personal saiety were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States naval-t —i n-service.The 22-year-old former Cloud-buster, who went overseas last October, served for four months as pilot of a carrier-based Hellcat fighter plane before returning to the states in March.
