J. lUl*loway was licanl and decision held.A Negro Murderer Hanged by a Mofe in EUicotl City.Elucott City, Me., Slay 28.— Jacob Henson, the young colored man who was recently sentenced to be hanged on June 7, for the nturdei of Daniel F. Shea, was taken from the City Jail about 1 o’clock this morning and hanged to a tree.The lynching was the work of about twenty determined men, who fct red that the Governor of Maryland might be induced to interfere and commute the dead man’s sentence to life imprisonment. The grounds for this apprehension came from the repeated visits to the jail of specialists in mental diseases to inquire into Henson’s sanity and the reported intention of Governor Brown himself to go out there for the same purpose. The belief had been growing that Henson’s sentence might be commuted and he be spirited away to the Baltimore Penitentiary.The lynchers came in small groups, all being masked, and assembled near the jail. No alarm was given, and the first information Chief of Police Van-sant had of their presence was when the leaders of the throng demanded admittance to the jail. He attempted to have a talk with the leaders, but it was no use. “We have come for Henson, and we mean to have him,” was the only answer given to him.Till-: LYXSIIERS BREAK INTO THE JAIL.Admittance was refused, but the outer door was quickly battered down with iron sledges. The noise did not arouse the prisoner in his cell, nor was he awakened until the lock on his door gave way under the blows of the sledge hammer. As the lynchers rushed in he shrieked for mercy. A rope was thrown over the negroc’s bead, and, more dead than alive from fright, he was dragged from the cell. Shea was committed ahont three mouths ago and was one of the most brutal crimes ever committed in Howard county. With no other incentive than robbery the negro beat his employer’s head with an iron bar and left him dead in a room over the latter’s store, where he had lived alone. Henson’s arrest, trial and cion viction followed.
