The man who served both as police chief and fire chief for the city of Venice has died at the age of 74. James Dewey Stephens of Rt. 1 Box 1060, Venice, died early Saturday morning in Venice Hospital. Stephens was born in Venice and was appointed to the post of police chief in September 1937. He served in that ca pacity until 1941 when he was made fire chief. He held that position until he retired in 1963. Altogether Stephens has been employed with the city for 26 years. He was also a veteran of World War 1. He is survived by his wife, Madeline E. Stephens of Ven ice; a brother, Earl of Tampa; a sister, Mrs. Della Turbeville of Sarasota; two sons, James Glenn Stephens of Venice and Robert Lund Stephens of Ft. Myers; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Jones of Nokomis and Mrs. Dorothy Sapp of Tavares, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services will be conducted by Reverend Sandy Brunsen of the First Baptist Church of Venice. Burial will take place at Nokomis Cemetery with ar rangements by Farley Funeral Home.
