Sturgeon Bay, July 30,1885.Mr. Editor:—My alteution lias just been directed to the so called marine column in the Advocate of July 30th. 'Among other items I find one that attempts to give an account of the ground-ingot the schooner llalloran on Rowley’s Bay reef. I wish to state that this item concerning the release of the llalloran is false in nearly every particular lie (the editor) says “the Gladiator and Owen arrived at the scene the same even-, ing.” This is not true. The Gladiator and Owen did not reach the schooner until seven o’clock the next morning. They ran up outside the reef and camo to anchor in about nine fathoms of water toward morning, and had made no attempt to reach the vessel until after the Spalding arrived. I saw by the position of the vessel that it would be necessary to reach her from the inside of the reef. This I did, getting my line to the schooner before the Gladiator and Owen got away from their anchorage. So much for this part of it.He says: “The schooner was so much out of water, eight inches all around, that it was fouud necessary to remove everything that could be taken off in order to lighten her.”This part of the item is not true in any sense. First, the vessel was out fifteen inches forward aud about twelve inches aft. It was not found to be necessary to remove everything in order to lighten her. It was simply talked of as a last resort. The Spalding came for the scow ia order to have it there in case other expedients failed. Not a thing was taken from the schooner except the big anchor, and that was taken astern, and j a heavy strain hove on it while the j Spalding was after the scow. No attempt was made at palling until the Spalding returned to the vessel. He says: “A hawser was finally fastened to her spar near the cross-trees and one of the togs partly rolled her on her side while the other pulled her off.” This is not true. There was no hawser fastened to the spar, for the very good reason that no hawser was there to so. fasten. Some of the vessels running gear was unrove and fastened to the spar, but the tag parted the line twice, and finally gave up for the want of a hawser, after failing to roll thcschooner an inch. The vessel was pulled off by the three tugs—Gladiator, Spalding and Owen, the Gladiator being alone on her line, while the Owen was hitched on ahead of the Spalding, on the Spalding’s line, and the tug that Mr. Editor says was rolling j the vessel down on her side, was not ( pulling at all—her line having parted i some time previous.I I have been a reader and a patron of the Advocate'forsome time—aud there was a time when I prized the paper highly for its marine columns, but that time has passed. I have never before thought it worth while to contradict or correct j 1 the erroneous items that have appeared] in the Advocate, though very many ofj ‘ them have been false and misleading. I
