WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. has suggested that the Navy name its next nuclear aircraft carrier the “USS Yorktown.” In a letter to Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr., Byrd noted that the 200th anniversary of the American victory at Yorktown will be celebrated this year. Naval forces tipped the balance for the American forces led by Gen. George Washington in that conflict, Byrd said. “I am sure that you are aware of the il lustrious ships that have borne the name Yorktown, Byrd wrote, adding that two aircraft carriers with that name have served the country in wartime. “It is my hope that the Yorktown name will continue in its finest tradition of naval aviation,” he said. Byrd also suggested that Lehman an nounce the naming of the new carrier during the Yorktown bicentennial celebration.
