CANCER SALVEAn even more miraculous salve is remembered by residents of the Garden Peninsula in Delta County. The secret formula, developed by Dr. Edward La Motte, was touted as surefire cure for skin cancer.“I’ve seen it work,” claimed Mrs. Odana Plant, an Escanaba resident who lived in the Garden Peninsula for more than 50 years. “It was a wonderful formula that cured cancer perfectly.’”According to Mrs. Plant, nobody knows how to make the salve today.“The last member of the family died about three years ago,” she explained. “I don’t know what happened to the formula.Quackery? A boondoggle? Maybe not. entirely, according to Mary Cretens, a physician with the Delta-Menominee District Health Department.“There are a lot of natural things grow ing up here that would probably help people,” commented Dr. Cretens. “If you look at how much money is spent on plant research, you find there really isn't that much. The molasses has a high source of iron and this may help the blood.” she said “The bush labardor tea is also popular in the region,” Dr. Cretens added “People use it for their arthritic pains. It does contain a chemical that is similar to the mam ingredient of aspirin. It’s very good tasting and some people swear by it.
