RACHEL SPAIN CLARKERachel Spain Clarke, daughter of LeRoy'and Eliza Woodward Spain, was born on a farm five miles south of Runnells, Iowa, November 25, 1885 and departed from this earth July 18, 1970 at the Good Samaritan Center in Fontanelle, la.She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away July 15, 1945; rive sisters and two brothers. Soon after die became 22 years old, she decided to venture away from her home community, and by train she traveled to Adair, Iowa, a place where she had never been nor did she know any persons living there. She soon had a job and many friends.She was united in marriage to John J. Clarke, April 20, 1909. To their union, one son, Edmond, was born. John 'and Rachel lived on a farm near Canby, Iowa until the spring of 1914, at which time they moved to Arbor Hill where they operated the store and where she made her home until it was necessary for her to have help with the daily chores of living.Life was most meaningful to her when die could care for her flowers, when she could watch the birds, squirrels and farm animals and when she could see the snow being replaced by green plants of springtime.Those who mourn her death are her son and wife, Edmond and Eileen Clarke of Stuart; grandson and wife Eugene and Pauline Clarke of Stuart; grandson Kent Clarke of Stuart; and three great-grandsons, Roger, Kendall, ana Kevin Clarke of Stuart; a sister Ida Clarke of Greenfield; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The passing of Rachel Clarke means that her many fond memories as well as her turn of the century experiences can no longer be shared with those who live. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones and many friends.Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, July 20 at die Bickford-Murray Funeral Home in Greenfield with Rev. Harland Gant officiating. Organ selections were played by Mrs. Donald Hogan. Pallbearers were Bill Nelson, Sam Nelson, Larry Allsup, Edwin Ly-■ don, Wayne Doud and Ernest Schultz Sr. Interment was in the Greenfield cemetery.
