Foote.Photographs were taken of the class and Mrs. Claphamand at the suggestion of Charles Meharry three rousing cheers were given for Mrs. Clapham. Mrs. Clapham conceived the gardening scheme early in the spring and found a friend of the cause who is known only to herself and he furnished the money necessary to carry it to a successful conclusion. Implements and seed were furnished by her and other citizens and the land was furnished by O. S. Clark. Seventeen boys entered the class, each being given a garden 15 feet square. Five found the sod pretty tough and the labor exacting, but twelve, under the instruction of Charles Meharry, stayed with the job. Their gardens were productive and the vegetables were used by the boys in their families and sold by them, so that, besides cultivating the habits of industry, patience and grit, it was of pecuniary advantage to them.It is gratifying to know that the first attempt was so successful and Mrs. Clapham, whose heart is in the work and whose time is so generously given because of her love for the boys, will continue the work next year on a larger scale. She is assured of a class more than double this year’s in number. In her work she is having the hearty cooperation of the Attica Industrial Exchange bureau and the encouragement of all good citizens.Buildmsr Association is Prnsnerotis.
