It seems there had for 0 ] sometime been a difficulty between Morris and Charlie Behrnes, two cousins. That quiet Sabbath evening, and at that sacred place where a good man and a noble Christian had gathered the little childreu of the neighborhood to teach them of a Savior, came Morris, and Paulite Behrnes, his father, one with a piss tol and the other with a shot gun.Mr. Townsend ihe Superintendent, having heard of the difficulty be-e | tween these young men, and seeing them coming in that little house j thus armed, knew trouble was So a 1 ahead. J j talking with him, Morris and his to,l j j father, Paulite, rushed from the cjoi house and begun firing, the first ^uS load of sixteen buckshot striking Mr. Townsend in the stomach. L,! Charlie then began tiring at Morris1 Jjjj and Paulite as they stood at the door, although he himself had been shot through and through. Every shot ho made took effect. Morris was slightly wounded, Paulite shot in both arms. Mrs. Nephler, in trying lo get the children out of the way, lecieved a very dangerous and perhaps mortal wound.Mr. Alonzo Woods, running to her r i assistance, was shot through the j. thigh, Charlie, after emptying bis . j pistol- ran over to Mr. Merritt’s house, followed by Paulite, who tried to force his way into the room, mid throwing himself upon the bed was dead in live minutes.
