His first work, ‘ i “ The Principles of Geology, was published in 1833, and j ■ has reached a ninth edition. 'lhia was followed by ' ! “ Elements of Geology ua 1838, subsequently reprinted ' nznlt-r the title of *• A Manual lt;f Elementary Geology,” which has passed through several editions. In 18-11 he j published, under the title of ** Trareisin North America,” a narrative of a visit which he paid to North America, for | the purpose of examining* tfefc geological structure of that continent. In 18-15 he published his “ Second Visit to I the United States, in which he treats of the social as well ; as the geological characteristics of America.
