They departed early that morning for Farragut State Park in Idaho where they will attend the National Scout Jamboree West.The Midcounty Scouts registered a year ago for the Jamboree. They left by station wagon, hauling gear in a trailer. En route they were joined by a bus load of Scouts from Anahuac./ The Scout convoy has scheduled some 10 stops, spending their nights in National Guard Armories along their route. Stops include Vernon, Texas; Raton, N. M.; Sheridan, Wyo. and Butte, Mont.Following the Jamboree to be held Aug. 1-7, the Scouts will return to Texas by way of Yellowstone Park, Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Black Canyon at Gunison National Bank in Montrose, Colo.A camp out at Moran, Wyo., is also planned. Aug. 12 will find the Scouts back at Raton, N. M., and they will stay in Vernon, Tex., on Aug 13, returning to Midcounty on Aug.14.The troop is justifiablyproud that average cost for thfj trip will be $175 per scout. More than half the troop is making the trip. F. Halter of 2229 Merriman, Port Neches for two weeks before continuing his sixCalifornia.Kazuto, his Texas nickname, was no stranger to the area, having met the older Halter son, Frankie, when Frankie visited Japan several vears aao under the same Lions InternationalYouth Exchange Program.The Halters were delighted to have the boy inSweden, for a visit. The plans had to be canceled due to an illness in her family at the last minute. They feel they made a wise choice in giving their son his trip to Japan as a graduation present from high school.We wanted to give him something different andis now a student at the University of HoustonANYONE CAN apply to make a six-week trip through the Lions Club Youth Exchange Program. Most people do not un derstand that they do not have to have a relative thatis a Lion to apply.locations included in the program. Several of the most visited countries are Sweden, France, Australia, Switzerland, South America and Japan.Application can be made through Joe Redman at the Beaumont District office of Lions Clubs or information about the program can beaccording to eye witness accounts.Wednesday afternoon's storm, which appeared suddenly in the area, hadprompted the skiers to head for safety. Mulkey and Freeman ordered Rhonda Fulgham, of Nederland, driver of the boat, and her companion, Janice Duhon, of Groves to start the motor. They had decided to be pulled rather than take the time to swim to the boat, according to Miss Fulgham They were in the middle of the river about a mile upstream from the Country Club.Freeman dipped beneath the surface of the water to secure a ski when the bolt hit, killing Mulkey instantly. Freeman reported feeling the jolt and momentarily believed a passing boat must have hit him. Miss Fulgham stated that she too, felt the effects of the force, complaining of a pain in her arm.Freeman pulled Mulkeyto the boat and help was summoned upon reaching shore. Orange County Justice of the Peace Joe Bunn pronounced Brian dead by electrocution at the scene.Brian was a senior to be at Nederland High and was a member of the basketball team.Harper Augsburger, whocoached Brian, and Neal Morgan, Nederland athletic director, mourned the loss of the youth. Morgan called him as fine a young man as I ever saw.Weldon Davis Funeral Home was in charge of Friday services at theFirst United Methodist Church in Nederland Brian left his mctner ana father, a brother, Bruce, a sister Mrs. Elyse Tuttle of Corpus Christi, and twograndmothers.
