PEPO IS THE MAN WANTED.Well known in Police circles as theJM an who left Canada for Montana.4Sheriff Hagen is in . receipt of the following letter, in answer to one sent out by him shortly after thlt; discovery of a murdered man in a cabin4mon F. Truchot’s ranch on the Muddy, which information will aid the sheriffthe6 -materially in the capture offt ■ *guilty parties. It is, dated at headquarters N. V., M. Police, Pincher Creek, Alta, N. W. T., Canada, July 18,1898: *Dear Sir:—G. A. Mills, of this dis-, «ftrict, has handed me your letter (per_ *S. Y.' Penrod) enclosing account of finding of body of a murdered . man in F. Truchot’s house by Rob. Davis,.The memorandum book found containing the entries quoted in your letter, I, as well as G-. A. Mills and others, identify as,the property of one William Pepo, of this place, now abseut.Pepo, whose description is attached. has served several sentences herefor theft, haviiig completed his last sentence (inflated by myself) in January. Then he went to Macleod, where be worked unt the end ofMay, as you will see by attached letter, Which he wrote to a friend hero, and subsequently went to Montana. I am now endeavoring to ascertain f he left Macleod with any one, presumably the murdered man.Iu the event of his returning here, let me know if you desire any steps to be taken. Yours truly,A. ROSS CUTHBEBT,Justice of the Peace,• Inspector N. W. M. Police...DESCRIPTION. OF WILLIAM PEPO.Fair, light blue or grey eyes, aged 40 years, powerfully built, height about 5 feet 8 inches; bald headed, sharp featured, not bad looking, had beard and mustache when here. Is a German and speaks English perfectly. Is well educated for laboringman. Has done journalistic work and writes shorthand.Through the diligent efforts of Deputy Sheriff Penrod, the above information bearing upon the capture of the person instrumental in the murder of an unknown person, foundin a cabin on the Muddy June 29th, is brought to light; as well as much other evidence likely to be of service in the event of capture. As will be seen by the above desorption, Pepo is a German and it is also pretty certain that the murdered man was of. German nativity or extraction. Some time thip spring two men stopped at August Kropp’s ranch, about ten miles from Pondera, and inquired the way to Choteau. Mr. Kropp invited them to partake of supper, which they did. Both the strangers talked German with him, and his recollection of them bearsclose resemblance to the description in possession of the sheriff. After supper the men in inquiring the way were told by the host that the Muddy was high and that they should .go the longer route by the bridge, aud that should they not feellike pursuing further, they would find an did, unoccupied cabin just beyond the bridge, where they could be sheltered for the night. This is the cabin where the corpse was found, The distance from Kropp’s is about seven miles.Pepo, in height, was* about the same as the murdered man, but his weight was ;much heavier, boing about 180 pounds, and his breast measured about 40 inches; while hisvictim wore a 37 - coat and was a• *The raiment onslimly built man. the corpse was minutely examinedby a dealer in men’s wear, who is very familiar with such articles sold in this vicinity, and he is positive none of the articles mentioned werewJpurchased this side of the line.It is therefore a .reasonable con-■elusion that the two men came directly from the north in company. At first, when the murdered man’s body was found, together with an overcoat and a note book, it was supposed that these were the'.property of the murdered man, but later, evidence led to the belief that they were the property of the criminal at large, as the coat was considerably too large for the dead man.fThe note book found contained a great deal ofisliorlhaud, as well as names of a number of different men the owner of • the book had worked for. Also a partial memorandum for the years ’95 and 6.On writing to several parties, whose addresses were found in this note. -book, information descriptive of the owner was received, which description does not compare with that of the murdered man.The sheriff’s detective service willput forth every effort to capture the guilty party. Governor Smith has been writteu the facts in regard to the case and requested to offer a reward sufficient to .get secret service detectives at work on the case. Evi-tdence is. rapidly accumulating against' this mad Pepo, and if he should be captured, the evidence is too strong for him to escape punishment.Ii$250 REWARD.Later—Governor Smith has offered a reward of • f!250 for the apprehension of Wm. Pepo.Ii(
