Salem Ala., July 28. 1857.Messrs. Editors:—In the Daily Sun of yesterday I notice au article over the signature of “Spectator,” purporting to give the details of a difficulty between myself and Mr. YV. II. Maynor. Allow me to correct a mistake contained in that article. Your correspondent says that “On the 18th inst., an article appeared in the Era, which Maynor considered as reflecting personally on him, and demanded the author. Smith refused to give it and declared that he would lose his ears before he would do so.” This is not true. From the date of the issue of the Era containing the article at which Maynor took offence, to the time of his assaulting me in the street, he never saw me personally, nor did he demand the author of the article, either through a written note, ora second person claiming to act for him. It waa never my design to conceal from Maynor the author of the article alluded to, nor did I consider it “as reflecting personally on him” or calculated to do him any injury whatever. I believe the outrage committed upon my person by Maynor and his sou was prompted by malicious feelings. I deny being satisfied with “parts” I had played in the affair, though I should have certainly satisfied “Col. W. 11. Maynor,”—as “Spectator” styles him—had there been no interference with the “scuffle” which “ensued.” J. II. SMITH.IT. V A UARRI6« At. CO
