By MARTHA REINKE rwews-Record Staff Writer Police and concerned community res idents still are searching in earnest for Kelly Bergh Dove, who disappeared from a Harrisonburg gas station more than a month ago. Harrisonburg police detectives said Tuesday that although they have re ceived a multitude of phone calls from people who want to help and from people who claim they know something about the case, there is nothing new to report. Mrs. Dove, 20, of Rt. 1, Bridgewater apparently was kidnapped from the Imperial Gas Station on South Main Street about 2:30 a.m. June 18. Her alleged captor is believed to have been driving a “silver-colored” Ford. Police said they have followed through on almost every phone call they have received, but all have led to dead ends. “The biggest thing we thought we had going for us” was a report of an abduction in Augusta County about three weeks ago, detectives said Tuesday. A 17-year-old girl had reported that a man bearing a scar and a tattoo and driving a silver Ford tried to abduct her and a friend at a “well-known” swim ming hole in Augusta County. The girl, whose name was not released because she is a juvenile, told police that she fought the man and “got away.” The girl also could not say what happened to her friend, and police never were able to locate the friend to which the girl referred. The 17-year-old girl also gave police a description of her alleged captor which was similar to the description of the man who apparently kidnapped Ms. Dove, police said. Although the incident did not receive publicity in Harrisonburg, there was “wildfire there in Augusta County,” the detectives said. After about three days of intense investigations in the Augusta County area, the girl was asked to take a polygraph test. She then broke under pressure and “admitted” her story was “false,” the detectives said. “She pretty well memorized the whole scheme” that Mrs. Dove's alleged captor apparently followed, the de tectives said shaking their heads. The juvenile “then started on another” story and told detectives that she had received a call from Mrs. Dove. Police said again the girl broke down and admitted that she fabricated the story. “The girl has got a problem,” de tectives noted Tuesday. In the first week of investigations after Mrs. Dove's disappearance, police called in a psychic to help with the case. Detectives said Tuesday it was the first time in the history of the Harrisonburg Police Department that a psychic has been asked to help. The psychic, Noreen Renier of Barboursville, did furnish police with some information, but detectives re fused to comment on anything the woman said claiming it would “cause nothing but confusion.” Police also would not say whether the psychic's visions indicated Mrs. Dove is alive or dead. Detectives last talked with Ms. Renier Saturday and the psychic said “roughly the same thing.’ The detectives noted that psychics “don’t see things in a particular sequence,” but that they're “sure she’s right on some of the points.’’ Ms. Renier, who refused to comment on the Dove case Tuesday, said her visions appear when she is holding property that belongs to the victim in a crime. She noted that missing persons are “more complex because there is “nothing to tie me into the person. Police also are investigating reports of bodies being found in other areas around the state. Police checked into reports of a body of a woman found in Goochland County, and learned the woman died one to five years ago. Another report of a woman found in the Chesapeake Bay about two weeks ago was dismissed when it was learned that the woman was black. Regardless of the dead ends, ‘We're on the phone” with each report of a body being found, the detectives said. Police also have identification on Mrs. Dove filed at the state medical exam iner’s office “in case’ an unidentified body shows up. Last week, detectives said someone reported spotting Mrs. Dove in a car traveling through the Luray area. Police checked into the report and found that a couple from out of town was passing through. The woman, who matched a description of Kelly Dove, is out to be a look-alike, detectives said. Along with checking into every avail able avenue, police also are reviewing all the information they already have gathered “‘to make sure we haven't missed details.” “You never know. The next call might be the person who finds her,” the detectives said.
