Tyro Sculptors Display WorksWhat a score of neophyte sculptors have produced with red terra cotta clay and the instruction of an expert has been exhibited in 103 Harris hall this week. Saul Baizerman, who reigns over the morning and afternoon classes of buddingTipica Group Scheduled for Kent BowlA colorful p.ogram of Latin American folk music, songs, and dances featuring the Waldo Tipica ensemble will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in the recently dedicated Atwater K»nt bowl in Idyllwild, according to Dr. Max T. Krone, president of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation and dean of the SC Institute of the Arts.The concert will be the third twilight prcgram to be held in the bowl since its dedication by a group of nationally known artists July 3. The new amphitheatre is the first unit of the Idyllwild School of Music and theArts.Artists appearing in the LatinAmerican progrcm will be Elisabeth Waldo, violinist and director; Jose Barroso and Laurindo Almeida, guitarists; Natividad Va-cio. folk singer; Angel Guzman and Enriquetta Vacio, dancers; Federico Salvatti, marimba soloist; and Carl S. Dentzel. commentator.The concert will include authentic pre-Cortesian, Spanish. Mexican. Central American. Caribbean. Andean. Amazon, and Brazilian selections. Members of the ensemble will be attired in native costumes cf Central and South America *Elisabeth Waldo, a graduate of Curtis institute in Philadelphiaand violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra, organized the ensemble last year with artists from Mexico, Guatemala. Brazil. Peru, and the United St3 tes.Michelangelos, considers hischarges “very promising.”“This exhibition shows the surprising changes that only six weeks of study have wrought in the work of the students,” Baizerman said Tuesday.He pointed out that one of the major faults of beginning sculpture students is the tendency to view their model as a series of separate sections rather than a unified whole. Consequently, he said, the feeling embodied in their pieces is one of clashing disjointedness.■ Although many of the pieces displayed are rough, unfinished “sketches.” there can be seen a marked contrast between the students’' early attempts and their more recent works.Baizerman explained that after only a few weeks’ experience in sculpture, students begin to acquire the all-important feeling for form, rhythm, and mass.While the morning class in life modeling has concentrated on full length figures, the more advanced afternoon class has been concerned with body details of their models. This accounts for the profusion of unconnected limbs and dismembered torsos in the exhibit.Both classes are displaying examples of memory sketches, inwhich the sculptor works from memory after a short period of posing by the model; life studies, in which the sculptor works from a model who poses almost continuously; and imaginative compositions from life, in which the student, though working from a model, expresses his emotional response to the pose.The pieces of sculpture in the exhibition illustrate the importance that sculptors place on basic movement rather than on superficial features. In several shortweeks. Baizerman’s students havebecome extremely familiar with this emphasis.
