But to the thoughful observer, the conference • served to emphasize the fact that this* is cne of the most tragic and difficult social and eocncmic problems of the■ a %modern age.Never in modern history has the I plight of racial minorities, principally the Jews, been so bitter. The pogroms of ancient times almost I pale into insignificance beside those I of today. Germany, of course, is I the seat of the Jewish oppression.It is apparently Hitler's desire to I completely eliminate Hebrew influence of any kind in Teutonic I territory. In Germany, and also in I Austria since the anschluss, Jews I have been forbidden to engage in I most fields of profitable occupation. I Even when they are not driven out I of business, their stores are placard- I ed, and the German who trades with I them comes at once into conflict I with the dread Nazi secret police. I Jewish professional men—doctors* I lawyers, writers, teachers—are boy- I cotted. In German schools, the in- I structors tell their pupils to have I nothing whatever to do with Jews, I either socially or as a matter of I business. Persons with as little as I one-eighth Jewish blood are classi-1 fied officially as Semitics, and are I consequently ostracized. In brief, I the Jew, under Hitler’s dream of a I race of Nordic superman, is regard- I ed as an enemy of the state. IMatters would not be so bad were I the Jews allowed to leave Germany 11 and Austria with what resources I they possess, to seek a place in other I lands. But the Jew who is given I a German passport is necessarily I a bankrupt. His money, his proper- I* ty, even his personal effects, are I taken from him.
