VIERECK USEDMONEY FOR OWNtfENDS, CHARGEDEditor 'of German PaperSaid to Have Invested Fundof 6100,000New Yor.k* July 27.—Evidence that George Sylvester Viereck, whose claim to Americanism is* being: Investigated,obtained $100,000 for hla own uses frompro-'Germans, who believed they werecontributing to Improve the status of enemy aliens, has been obtained through examination of witnesses and of his bank accounts, It was announced today a.t the office of Morton E, Lewis, state attorney general. About half this sum was Invested In German war bonds and ■ municipal securities.After America entered the war^ and Viereck changed the name of his publication from the Fatherland to Vie-reek's Weekly* his source of revenue, which was the German government, was cut off. To Carry on his alleged German activities* it was charged by Alfred Becker, deputy attorney general, he employed agents to collect funds under the representation that the money was to be used to finance the agricultural and industrial labor relief bureau, which he said was organized to aid unemployed enemy aliens. These agents, called as witnesses, told of their work In all parts of the country and of obtaining sums ranging from $5 to $300, According to Mr. Becker, the evidence indicated that YJereek paid himself a salary of $700 monthly, and that ihe labor organization placed $400 or S500 worth of advertising in YJereck's Weekly each week. In these two ways. Mr. T3ecker declared, Viereck apparently obtained personal possessJ^i of virtually all the contributions. Transcripts of his bank accounts are safd to show ho purchased through Hugo Schmidt, German war bonds and Berlin elevated and subway company bonds.* It was Schmidt, now Interned, who acted for the German government In placing millions of dollars in American banks to the credit of former Ambassador van Bcrnstorff In connection with the Bolo Pasha caseIncidentally. Mr. Becker declared, it has been discovered that when the Fatherland was launched, Just.after the European war began, Count von Bern-storff was the first contributor, placing 51000 In Yl^reck's hands.
