A Check to Settlers—The Indians Claim Lands and Order Off Intruders. Fort Torren, Dak., July 27.—The Turtle Mountain Indians, from Canada, have crossed the line and ordered off all white settlers and refused to pay custom duties assessed against them by the Pembina agency. They claim the right to the lands and deny the legality of any laws levying taxes on them. Their chief, Little Shell, says, ‘We recognize no bounda ry lines and shall pass as we please.’ At least seventy-five half-breeds have moved over and all are pugnacious. Military interfer ference seems necessary.
