The Calliope.—This new steam musical instrument has been purchased by (’apt. Chouteau, with the right for the lower Mississippi, for six months, i We saw it yesterday for the'first time, and must say it is the most ingenious inventicn we have seen fora long time. Copt. Chouteau lias put it on his boat, the Amazon, and intends having keys j attached to it, so that it can be played ! the same as a Piano Forte. During \ his last trip down to New Orleans, a great deal of amusement was afforded all on board, at the entertainment of the people on shore, when the Calliope would play. At Hickman, fche preacher stopped his sermon—church being in at the time—and he, with his congregation, rushed out en masse to see what was the matter. At Memphis, where they have a strict ordinance j against organ grinders, the boat reach- | ing that place about 12 o’clock at night j the Mayor hoard the music, and condu-; dcd that the organ grinders were sere- ' nading him. He got out of bed, seized a club, and run all over town after the “infernal organ grinders,” and did not discover his mistake till the bout had left the landing.—St Louis Sun day Herald.
