4 T ft numerously attended meeting, called r\ by advertisement, of Ihoae anfftvoarable to the proposed Addition of £17,048 to the sum reserved in Schedule C for religious purposes, held in Mr. Levieu's Urge bill on Wedn?sday, the 25th instant, at B-ven o'clock evening, the following RESOLUTIONS were unanimously and enthusiastically adoptedOn the motion of Mr. William Currey, seconded by the Re?. William M'Intyre, Joseph Ede Pearce, Esq., was called to the chair.The Chairman then called opon Mr. Carrey, who offered np an appropriate and impressive prayer.1. Mr. William Carrey moved, and the Rev. William M'lntvre seconded, the first resolution— “ That this meeting, while it does not pronounceon the question of the ciwil establishment of the trne religion, disapproves of the. system of religious endowments which ob-’ tains in the colony, and feels therefore called opon to nse all legitimate means to secure its abolition, without prejudice, however, to the interest* of such as now receive salsries under its operation.2. The Rev. J. T. Waraker moved, and Mr. Martin seconded, the second resolution—“That this meeting is strongly opposed to theextension of the existing system of endowments by the proposed addition of £17,048 to the sum reserved in Schedule C for religious purposes.*’3. Mr- Patrick Hutchison moved, and Mr. William Zuill seconded, the third reaolntion— That the following Petition, in accordancewith the preceding Resolutions, be adopted — that signatures to it be procured, and the Member for the Northumberland Borough* be requested to present it to the Council, and to support its prayer.11 To the honorable the Legiilative Council of Sew South I Vales in Council a ne mb led.“The petition of the undersigned inhabitants of Maitland and its neighbourhood,“ Humbly Sbxwbth,“ That your petitioners are deeply impressed with the conviction that the system of religious support given to various denominations of professing Christians in this colony ia objectionable on principle, inexpedient and unjust in the existing state of the colony, and injurious to the best interests of trilt;“ religion.11 V’hife your petitioners refrain at present from inking up the genera! question of State support for religious purposes, they cannot but evpre-i their regret and surprise that hit Excellency the Governor General should at this r.me, when there it a considerable deficiency in the colonial revenue, propose such a large addition to the sum already available for religious purposes.“Your petitioners do not object to the proposed addition in a financial point of view only. They object to it on principle, and in the belief that the present system of religions endowments is not calculated to advance the aprentl of true religion throughout the colony.“Your petitioners therefore respectfully crave that your honorable house will give this representation your earnest considcral ion and attention, and decline to sanction the proposed addition to the sum reserved in schedule C for religious purposes. And your petitioners will ever pray.4. Andrew Lang, Eaq., J.P., moved, and Mr. Forster seconded, the fourth reaolntion*“That the following gentlemen form a Committee for the purpose of using all propsr means to secure the abolition of the present system of religiona endowments in operation in this colony Rev. William MacIntyre, Rev. Alex. M'Intyre, Rev. J. T. Waraker, Messrs. James Dickson, A. Dodds, W. Carrey, William Heagh, Miohael Seobbie, J. E. Pearce, Wallace, Znill, Sinclair, Reading, P. Hntchiaon, Dr. Soott, with power to add to their number; Mr. Hutchison to be convener.Mr. Hutchison baying been moved to the chair, the Rev. William M'Intyre moved that the thank* of the meeting be given to the Chairman for his conduct in the chair, which, being seconded by Mr. Griffin, was carried by acclamation.J. E.
