By ERNEST THOMPSON Whack! ... and away she goes! For those of you who have never witnessed Ada’s pint-sized golfers in action, it’s quite a sight to behold. Scores of youngsters traipsed across the fairways at Oak Hills Wednesday afternoon in the “qualifying” round of the Pee Wee City Golf Tournament. Chick Clark, club pro, announced the meet last week and, needless to say, it was enthusiastically received by the young Adans. Several oldsters commented on the upcoming meet with a wink and a grin, as though to say the kids should be humored in their efforts to learn the game. When they stepped up to the tees, how ever, some eyebrows lifted. Witness the following ex ample: 12-year-old Dwight Graves, who probably weighs all of 70 pounds, toured number one, two and nine holes in 21 strokes Wednesday afternoon. On the second, he was laying two within 30 yards of the green and except for one slight goaf could have easily bogied the hole. It should be added that the number two fairway is between 350 and 400 yards. Quite a knock for a youngster! Youngsters Take Game Seriously Tommy Criswell, a budding links standout, came in with a 24. The extroverted youngster was so “disgusted” with his total that he pleaded to keep it out of the paper. I know quite a few of Tommy's elders who would be happy with something like his score on the three long ones. Dave Davis Jr., John Harris and Lester Lydia all had 26 on the three holes to tie for third spot in the morning round. Approximately 20 others followed with the top score running somewhere around 35. The finesse with which the boys step up to the tee is amazing. Seldom do you see one hesitate and even less seldom do you witness a duff. They don’t hit the ball far, as a rule, but it is usually straight down the fairway. With added strength and more practice, it is easy to imagine some of them as future “greats” in the links field. Clark is to be congratulated for his efforts to promote the game among youngsters who, in many cases, are inter ested in no other competitive sports. It offers the opportunity for the smaller boys to participate in a game which will be theirs the remainder of their lives. City Tournaments Near Completion The Oak Hills pro hopes to get the tourney underway for real sometime next week. The entry list is still open to any boy under 14 who wishes to compete. A tournament for older boys is planned for later in the year. On the adult side of the golf circuit, Terry Wilcox and Keith Grimes conducted a battle royal Monday in the semi finals of the city championship. Wilcox came out ahead, 4 and 3, to move into the finals against the winner of the Bill Manning-Bobby Jones match. Wilcox had a par 37 on the final 9 and Grimes came in with a lower 38. In the first flight bracket, one finalist was decided when John Landreth ousted Junius Ridling in a semifinal match, 1-up. Landreth will meet one of five golfers who are still in the quarterfinals. Leon “Skeeter” Landreth and Dr. Clarence Taylor play with the winner going against Clifford Byrne in the quarter finals. Joe Bonar and Ed Halverson play for the right to meet the winner of the Landrith-Taylor-Byrne triumvirate. LAST LOOK S ARENA
