No radio failure in history reaped more indignationamong Americans than this failure to broadcast the Armstrong-Jenkins thing. INBC was swamped with calls from 37 states. For sheer volume.these angry calls and protests eclipsed any telephone barrage that a radio station or newspaper has had to contend with in recent times. Calls were more numerous than after the Hindenburg blimp disaster and exceeded those tallied by Orson Welles’ Martian invasion.There were more than 2,000 calls a*d two extra operators were pressed into service to aid the usual three. So many calls came in that an entire exchange was almost paralyzed. There were not enoughdial selectors to handle the flood.The New York Times had 1,200 calls on their tallying meter. They came in so fast that the meter couldn’t keep up with them.Never before, said the operators, had they talked to so many people in so short a time.
