Just twenty tlmv years ago the big side-wheel sti hi.iIkiuL Sultana blew up near Mejuplji.--, and now a tierce discussion among the sarviwns has sprung up as to whether she was blown up by a torpedo or by defective boilers. Win. C. Street, r, of St Louis, claims the Sultana v.as blown up by a daring Confederate b!o -l.ade-runner ..amod Robert Lowdelj, who placed a tolpodo aTUOUg the coal. Henry ,1. Lvdn, of the United States Lightship Li by, says the boilers of the steamer were defective. She was crowded with 2,11)0 passengers, mostly Union soldiers. Not more than -100 of those escaped. Some 1,700 were burned to death or drowned. It was the moat disastrous steamboat explosion ever known in this or perhaps any other country. Two or three weeks ago, April 27 and* 28, the few men who still survive that awful experience had a reunion at Hillsdale, Mich. Only a handful was present. Not more than eighteen men still live to tell the story of that terrible night.
