We understand that oh the lGth day oi July several men were arrested' near Oakland,, in this county, charged with horse-stealing. ( One of tire .parties arrested implicated *Sta-photon To wl*. send, son of Mr. W. T. Townsend, (foVzarrly of .this county)-who also re- ., sided near Oakland. Some of the parties ‘malting tlie arrests'went to Mr. Townsend’s fc'otjso to arrest him, and ho not observing them until they arrived close to the house, with drawn weapons,-was ordered . to halt, Seeing the party thus armed, and thinking probably that they intended some great bodily harm, ho made the attempt to run into his house, when ho was fired upon by the party aud mortally wounded. Wo have no information as to tho person who fired the fatal shot. .Mr. Townsend survived about twenty-four hours and expired, lie is believed to be innocent of any complicity with iheiiorso thieves,;-and sustained a good character. This account has been furnished us by a reliable gentleman, and is doubtless correct as to the main facts. Just the scene, not a month since, of a most terrible tragedy, wo regret that it is our duty so soon to record another iustanco of bloodshed, in our county.
