Salem, Ala., July 23, 1857.Editors Daily Sun : Our usually quiet village was thrown into considerable excitement to-day in consequence of a difficulty between J. H. Smith, editor of the Era, and Col. W. II. Maynor, which at one time promised to be serious. It appears that in the issue of the Era dated July 11th, the name of Wm. II. Maynor was announced as the American bank candidate for the Legislature. When the announcement appeared, Col. Maynor de- I nied that it had been done by his authority or with his consent, and demanded the authority, when the name of a gentleman of Girard was given. On the 18th instant, an article appeared in the Era, which Maynor considered as reflecting personally on him, and demanded the j author. Smith refused to give it, and declared that he would lose his ears be- i fore he would do so. To-day Maynor, j armed with a double-barrel gun, met : Smith on the side walk and again demanded the author, when Smith gave it. In the meantime a youth came up and struck Smith three times with a stick, j Smith walked into the Post Office, and as i he came out he was met and struck by Maynor in the piazza, with the fist, when a scuffle ensued, but they were parted before much damage was done, botli seeming well satisfied with the part theyhad played.
