Mike Zerressen cruised to easy wins in the mile and two mile run and several other winners posted runaway victories during the third of the Northwest Florida Track Club’s summer meets at Memorial Stadium Thursday. In the only down-to-the-wire finish of the evening, Pat McLaughlin edged Jason Goddard by an inch in the 100-yard dash in 10.2 seconds with third place finisher Sher man Eller one foot behind McLaughlin. Sharon Kenton, a Bruner Junior High student, scored a tight victory over her school teammate Stephanie Dorman in the women’s 100 yard dash in 12.1 seconds. Zerressen built up large leads in both men’s long distance races cruising to easy wins. His performances pushed him to the lead of the summer-long Grand Prix com petition. Keith Lee, who figured pro minently in other Northwest Florida Track meets this summer, was absent from this event. Three members of the NWFTC went on to top finishes in the shorter distances dur ing Friday's track and field competition of the Sunshine State Games in Gainesville. Dorman posted a second place in the women’s 100 meter dash in 13.72 seconds followed by Cynthia Boling of Fort Walton Beach High School with a 14.21 clocking. Kenton placed second in the 200 meter dash in the open women’s division in 28.45 seconds followed by Dorman in third place with a 29.69 clocking. Kelly Chandler took third in the open women’s 400 meter run in a time of one minute, 4.72 seconds. Another local runner Jim Baggett, took third place in the 100 meter dash with a 13.45 time in the master’s men’s division. Kenton and Chandler qualified for the junior division of the games during the district meet at Pensacola over the July 11-12 weekend. Track competition in the games concluded Saturday night. The next in the series of the track club’s summer meets will be at Okaloosa Walton Junior College at 6 p.m., August 6. Track events include all regular distances from 100 meters to two miles with several heats comprising the shorter events. No entry fees are charged for the meets and anyone is invited to attend. Lott shot a 67, Baird 68. South African Gary Player had a 68 and topped a group at 212. There were five at that figure placing a total of 14 men within three strokes of the top spot — and 25 within four shots going into Sunday’s final round of the chase for a $54,000 first prize. British Open champ Bill Rogers had to rally from a dou ble bogey on the ninth to shoot a 72 that left him at 214. Strange, a native of nearby Norfolk, Va., but now a resident of this resort community, miss ed only one green in his remarkable effort over his home course. That was the 18th, where he drove into trouble, had no chance of reaching the putting surface, played his third to within about 12-15 feet of the hole and made the par-saving putt. “Boy, I'll tell you I made some of the damnedest putts over those hills and knolls to day,” Strange said. He played his front side in 33, with the highlight a wide breaking 40-footer on the ex tremely difficult eighth, scored from about 20 feet on the 11th, then birdied three in a row beginning on the 15th, where he hit a sand wedge to within six feet.
