Collins wants hymn censoredNever let it be said Congress has nothing to do.Congressman Jim Collins, Dallas Republican, wants a hymn removed from the Book of Worship used by U.S. armed forces. The hymn is “It Was on a Friday Morning,” and is about the crucifixion of Christ. Collins objects to parts of the hymn. The hymn reads, “You can blame it on to Adam, you can blame it on to Eve, you can blame it on the apple, but that I can’t believe. It was God that made the devil, and the woman and. the man, .and there wouldn’t be an apple if it wasn't in the plan.”Collins does not object to any of that, but rather to the refrain: “It’s God they ought to crucify instead of You and me, I said to the Carpenter a hanging on the tree.”Collins said the hymn “was composed in a spirit of hate, in order to intro-^ duce hatred.”J Although Collins has been working for five months to secure the removal of the hymn, he said he was reluctant to becomeinvolved in the issue when it was first brought to his attention.I was reluctant to get into it because I was reluctant to show our military in a poor light,” he said. The chief chaplain of the Veterans Administration has ordered the hymn removed from the VA's copies of the book.Collins said he brought the mattertnthe attention of the Department of Defense some months ago. He was told the hymn was “not included to be blasphemous or to destroy faith, but to provide a vehicle for dealing deeply and thoughtfully with the death of Christ.” Defense told Collins, he said, the Armed Services Chaplains Board did not intend to remove the hymn from the book.Collins said the matter has “been brought before the armed services subcommittee of the House,” and as a result, the chaplains have initiated a review.DAV sets meetingThe Auxiliary of the Dis- For further information, abled American Veterans caH 264-8186 or 641-2675.will meet Tuesday at 7:30 -——p.m. in the American Le- New York City has overgion Hall, 218 SouthCenter 000 treesSt.
