Rogers, of today’s Ganado, in his memories recalls such a scene after the battle of Plum Creek in 1840, near today’s Lockhart. A few miles from Lockhart toward Austin you pass the creek with this historic name.es.The Camanches raided and destroyed the newly rising port city of Linnville, killing many settlers and taking with them two women and some Negroes. One was Mrs. Watts, the wife of Major Watts, the tax collector of Linnville, whom they killed. Mrs. Watts was rescued in the battle of Plum Creek. The other lady was a Mrs. Crosby of Victoria, also killed then by the Indians.There were about fifteen inRogers collected these ponies and tired to drive them to camp. But his horse was so completely exhausted after the battle, that Rogers had to leave the ponies.On his way then he came upon a wounded Indian, laying on the ground with a carpet sack laying by him. This attracted Rogers’ attention. He got off his horse and started to examine the carpet bag.
