Church.f The Convention was called to order by ° Col. Phillip Cox, jr., of Gilraer. lQ Dr. Jesse Flowers of Harrison, nomi-is oated Col. Samuel L. Hays of Gilmer, as ,r. chairman. Col. Hays upon taking the rt| chair thanked the Convention for the hon-or conferred upon him, which although unexpectedly was fully appreciated. He y* did not feel flattered but highly honored or by being selected to fill so important a u position in a Convention composed of so he a nuc°her of the most respectablemen of the district, it being the largest meeting of the kind ever held in to Northwestern Virginia. That a con-ro venu'on composed of so much intelligence ji(? would in a l probability be governed by correct principles and arrive at correct conclusions, and that its decision would carry great weight and influence with it. That in this he would contribute to the full extent of his abilities. That Lhe nomination made by such a convention would carry dismay to the heart of the enemy, and must meet with success.Messrs. K. J. Alfred, Chas. Roads and VV. P. Ctoper were appointed Secretaries.The Convention being thus temporarily organised, Mr. N. H, Taft of Barbour,offered the following resolution :Resolved, That a- Committee of one from each county in the district bo appointed to report upon the credentials of members,^*Which resolution was adopted, and thereupon the following gentlemen were appointed said committee:Committee on Credentials,— Harrison, Dr. Flowers; Barbour, Nathan II. Taft ; Gabel, O. L. C. Hines man ; Lewis, Dr. VV. J. Bland ; Wood, D. R. Neal ; Ritchie. II. 0. Collins ; Jackson, A. Bowman; Wirt, Unrepresented ; Gilmer James 11. French ; Dod-dridg**, J. II. Bee; Kanawha, Win, M. Lieil ; Mason. A, F. George ; Putnam, Jos, B. Chilton ; Rando ph, Sim. Crane ; Braxton, Samuel Skidmore ; Upshur, W. 0. Carper.The C mmiltee retired and during itsabsence Dr, Flowers of Harrison addressed the Convention.AfLer which th- Convention adjourned until I o’clock, P.
