HOMPSON By Dr..NA Architects are now preparing plans for the conversion of the former —— Elementary School building in Herkimer to an apartment building, ac cording to local businessman Robert Castle. He said he has no estimates on the cost of the conversion at this point, but when the plans are completed, the construction phase of the project will be put out to bid. Some 28 to 30 units of non subsidized “‘quality’’ housing will be constructed he said. Most will be two bedroom apartments. Castle agreed in March to purchase the former Margaret Tager Elementary School from the Herkimer School District for a sum of $40,000, saying that he planned to convert the building into an apartment complex for upper income persons. He felt the complex would serve a need since, he said, it is often difficult for persons, particularly young rofessionals, to find suitable casing in the village. The agreement between Castle and the school district was contingent upon Castle's being able to obtain a zoning variance to go ahead with the project, but village officials have said that a variance is not needed. Tager School, located on South Washington Street, is in an R-3 residential zone. The sale of Tuger School by the district was part of the school board’s effort to raise money to balance the district's 1982-83 budget. The board included $250,000 on the revenue side of that budget for the anticipated sale of unused school district property. The move was made in order to hold down taxes The East Herkimer School was sold to the Town of Herkimer for $80,000 and the town sold the building to Mohawk Data Sciences for $60,000 to use for office space. The town will use the remaining portion of the property for a playground. The undeveloped Hawkins and Levin site was sold to John Sninchak of Highland Avenue for $10,050. This summer, the school district offices are being moved from Steuben School on East German Street into the high school. The high school along with L.W. Bills Elementary School and Foley Middle School will be the three school in use in the district by September
