LAKEPORT . Two Napa State Hospi tal escapees and a third man were killed in a head-on crash involving a stolen car after two robberies and two car thefts. Lake County sheriff’s deputies report ed Monday. said three patients, one a woman, escaped from the hospital Sunday. A sheriff's deputy said soon after, three men and a woman beat and robbed a 74-year-old man and his wife and stole their 1963 model car. They pretended to have car trouble, and when a second elderly couple stopped to help, they too were beaten and robbed of money and their 1971 model car, officers said. ONE MAN fled in the 1963 car while two men and the woman fled in the 1971 car toward the town of Lower Lake, about seven miles away, deputies said. Officers said it was in the 1971 car that hospi tal patients Frank Leon McDonald, 24, and Ju dith Ann Gourdin, 19, were killed instantly. The driver of the on coming car, John R. Whiteley, 23, of Marys ville, died early Mon day. Two passengers in his car were in criticial condition. Also in critical condi tion from the crash at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital was Benjamin A. Pimentel, 20, another Napa hospital patient, officers said. Identifica tion of the man who drove off in the 1963 car was not available, offi cers said.
