On 10,000 Mile Hike\Herbert W. Hoover of Newark, N. J., who is walking from New York City to San Francisco and back attain, a distance of 10,000 miles was a guest in this city last Friduy night, leaving here Saturday morning for Streator where he stayed over Sunday.Hoover is out to win the 10,000 mile walking championship of the United States, .and incidently a prize of $1,000 offered by the Gray Crest Athletic club of Newark of which he is a menber. In addition to the prize offered by the club he has a side wager of $500 that he would not get his hair out before returning to the starting place, and its a cinch that he will win this bet, as at the present time his hair is very long and curly and would be prized highly by any fair maiden.He left New York November the 1st, 1912 and must be back by November 1st, 10L3 to win the $1,000. When in Toluca tie was 32 days and 4 hours ahead of his schedule, and since leaving New York, had been walking 8 months and 5 days, and in that time has walked 8,933 miles. He startedon the trip without money and is obliged to liye enroute from con-tributations given him in ex. change for cards bearing his picture.He says that when he left home he only weighed 10J pounds andat the present time weighs 145,and thinks that walking is the only exercise to build up a run down system,
