Beddome, P.M.]2 hlt;ma* McMokon, a boj, informed against for running away from the llfraoooibe lndos-trial School on May 4t was ordered to be sent back and to receive 12 stroke* with a biroh rod.John Tucker, agent, of Moonta, was charged, at the instance of Thomas O'Leary, landlord of the Hamburg Hotel, with obtaining, under false pretence* and by means of valueless cheques, £4 and £5, on June 17. Proeeoutor deposed that prisoner came to his house about Jane 11, and borrowed £2 or £3 from him. He gave witness a cheque for £4, signed 11 John Tucker,” on the Bank of South Australia at Moonta. Cashed it, kept the £2 or £3 that prisoner owed, and gave him the balanoe on the faith of hia cheque being good. Received the second obeque for £4 from W. Dillon. Prisoner was then in the house, so deponent stopped hia account out of the cheque. The forms were returned oa presentation at the Bank, marked “ No acoount. By prisoner—I don't remember receiving cheque from you before. William Dulont bootmaker, of Rundle - street, said the cheque for £4 was given to him by prisoner on June 17. At Tuokor’s request handed it to prosecutor to change, so that he might take tbe amount of bia account. O'Leary stopped £1 8s. and returned deponeut £2 17a. Witness kept £1 12s., and gave prisoner the balance, 2U. Deponent endorsed the cheque because he bad bad prisoner's cheques before, and they hud always »©eu good. James Steele, cashier at the Bank of South Australia, said tbe cheque for £5 had passed through the Bonk for traosinia-ion to Moonta, and was returned with the answer, *' No account. By tho Court—O. A. (Jardiuor marked tbe cheque at Moonta. Detective Doyle deposed to having arrested prisouer at tbe Hamburg, when be ujuJo no statement. Committed for trial to the Supreme Court. Bail refused.
