PETERSBURG EXPRESS.Wedaesrtny Moruittf. July 25. 1S55.YELLOW FEVKU IS GOSPORT.-.Thu Norfolk Herald, of yesterday, has the following:As a number of cases of yellow fever (traceable to the steamer Bon Franklin), some of them terminating fatally, have oe-corred In Gosport recently, and as doubtless the most exaggerated accounts of the circumstance have gone abroad, we have deemed it our duty to obtain and publish a correct statement of the facts, from the most authentic, and reliable sources. The steamer Ben Franklin, Capt. Bynum, from St. Thomas, arrived at quarantine on the 5th June. She was boarded by the Health -Officer, to whom the Captain stated that she hud had no case of yellow fever on board ; a'fireman had died suddenly from disease of the heart, and the-man who took Ids place bad also died of exhaustion ; with these exceptions, the crew had been entirely (from disease. The steamer remained at quarantine 13 days, and no ease of sickness having occiiired in that time, and the Health Officer finding the vessel in a cleanly condition, with the consent of the Board of Health, gave her a permit to come up into . the harbor, on the 13th June, upon the positive condition that her hold was not to be broken out. Having, contracted with a party | in Gosport to have her work done there, she ! was taken up to Pagcand Allen's ship yard I (fext to the navy yard wall).. There she | remained 13 days, during which period it is stated the Captain violated his engagement in having the hold broken out. On the 5th I of July, a man who had been at. work on [ 'ward of her was taken sick, and his disease I proved to be yellow fever. This was the first case in 28 days after the steamer’s arrival. He died on the 8th July, and the Town I Councils of Portsmouth immediately con-I vened and issued nr. order to send her buck [ to quarantine, which was done forthwith,| and she now remains there. Following this | case were a number of others, among whom L were six of the hands belonging to the f steamer, who were sent to the Marine. Hos-; ital—two of whom have died. In Gos-! art, six persons have died in all—including | -.ho man before named—and the following is a list of their names and residences :Mr. Carter, of Richmond : Jacob M. Hace, Nev.- Jersey; Mas. Du berry, Hampton; Frcd-1 '-rick Godwin, Gosport; Miss Foliins, Gos-t port.About fifteen cases remain under trcat-| mcnt.As yet, the epidemic has been confined to [ the vicinity of Page and Alien's ship yard,[ which has been boarded up and all eotnmu-i mention with it interdicted. Wo have not hoard of an v case beyond this small infected district, which was not contracted within it : and have no doubt that with due pre-fa-uution it will be kept confined to its present limits, and soon cease Jot- want of material to feed upon. Whatever rumor may say to the contrary, we can truly assert that Broth Portsmouth and Norfolk are entirely I. free from epidemics of every kind, and as I healthful as usual at this season—in the lat-I we will answer for it, every precaution I- will be used to keep it so.Tito Councils of Portsmouth, we understand, have instituted a Sanitary Committee with plenary powers to take any meals a res they may deem proper to remove the ;causes and prevent the introduction of dis-i- •. within the town. The committee con-fof the following gentlemen :J. X. Schoohicid, Jl. D., J. V, Pratt and G. It. Snead. The committee, wo are informed, will publish daily reports in the Transcript of the progress of the disease. The Late Case of Murdeii and Adci.te-!1lt;Wifeiextymwedextoraeqlieviwiat'st;cofatfrcAondeanin; sic tin a tfa i xricso;Eslasul;T.nilt; loi wi tb frc kr ri’ ei{ Mi th si 5 th a i th onMianto;drniSiswOrlaprethsoYlt;beAfrcmthbrvtB.C:ot(.rehannaof
