During the pa*t week two well known young men were laid at rest in Madison ceme-ter e«. They were George Erkstedt, proprietor of the Cardinal hotel, and William Franey, for 2T \ears pressman at the Democrat Printingrompr.njr. George was one of the popular voungbusmen* men of the third ward. His father, Ernest Ef kstedt, died several years ago. His mo?her, who was a Heitkamp. preceded the father in death by a number of years, George was active in the Third Ward Community club which came into existence several years ago He was especially interested in improvingLake Monona shore,Before entering the hotel business George'sfather was employed as passenger brakemanon the Chicago and Northwestern road. Erniewas hr k :ntn on the train which left Madison at H a. m. His neighbor, the late Al. Stone, wa* baggageman on the same train and the conductor was the late George Willott who resided on West Main street. Stone was a son of the late George “Jud” Stone, one of Madison'smo-t beloved newspapermen. “Jud” was city editor of the Democrat for many years and !afor he conducted a column, “Jud Stone s Gleanings” in the State Journal.was a quiet, likeable fellow-. He was a faithful employe of the Democrat company. He remained w-ith the company until two years ago when illness prevented him from continuing his work. His brother, the late Lawrence Franey. also was employed in theDemocrat office as a pressman.
