ON DAUPHIN ISLAND OPENED TO DAY—BUYER MUST BUILD RAILROAD TO MAINLAND. Tn the United States engineer's office here today bids were opened for the purchase of 709 acres of govern ment land on Dauphin Island. The bids were sent to Washington for ap proval. The government owns about 900 acres of land, which is located on the main island. Recently there was passed by congress an act authorizing the sale of the land at public outcry. The act stipulates that the pur chaser must construct a railway con necting the island with the mainland. It is enty more than likely that the prop will be sold to the Dauphin Island Railroad Company. The land is essential to the bridging of the waters between the island and mainland,.
