By HARRY QUILTER Herald Sports Editor The untimely death of Wilbur (Loup) Heggen last Sunday in an auto accident has recalled many of his athletic accomplish ments to his former MCHS teammates. In fact one of the stories could be a first in foot ball history. Back in October of 1924 the Morris Redskins were playing a football game at Aurora against Mooseheart and were trailing 6-0 late in the game. Some of the members of that Morris team were Soup, at full back; his brother, Earl (Con) at quarterback; Jim Feeney, halfback; Bill Carlson, at one tackle and Red Sleight — who later gained All-America honors at Purdue — at the other tackle. Dr. Wayne Graham, who passed this story on to us, was the center. After many unsuccessful cracks at the Mooseheart line, Don, according to Doc Graham, called the team together and devised a new play. “You snap the ball to me,” he told Doe, “and I'll try an end sweep. Soup, you follow behind me and when they gang up on me I'll toss the ball back to you,” Con instructed. They tried the play, with Con tossing the ball back to Soup just as he was swarmed under and Soup ram bled on to score the game-tieing touchdown. Thus, according to Doc Gra ham and other members of the team, the lateral pass came into being. Generally Bob Zupp ke, the famed Illini coach, has been given credit for the in stallation of the lateral pass in football, but the boys here claim that Zuppke did not use the lateral until a year or so after Morris players not only sur prised Mooseheart, but also the game officials. After a discussion and a look through the rule book, officials ruled that the play was valid and the touchdown was allowed. Soup was regarded as one of the all-time MCHL athletic greats as he excelled in all sports, especially football and basketball. After his high school days he became an excellent bowler, but being a part of a football history-making combin ation probably topped all his other accomplishments. PIRATE CAMP — The Pitts burgh Pirates tryout camp, rained out here last month, has been rescheduled for the MCHS diamond Thursday, July 30, ac cording to Pete Muffler, Morris area scout for the Pirates. All boys who signed regis tration cards here on the day the original camp was to be held, will receive cards by mail notifying them of the new date. Gene Baker, former Pirate great and now Scouting Super visor, will conduct the camp here and will be assisted by Muffler and Ed Tracy. Players should report ready to go at 9 a.m. and be prepared to work out until 3 p.m. They should be between 16 and 21 years of age. No American Le gion players will be permitted to participate in this camp un less he has written permission from either his Legion Coach or from the Commander of the Legion Post he represents in Legion play. Players must furnish their own shoes, uniforms, gloves and personal gear, with the Pirates furnishing all other equipment. Players will also be responsible for any expenses incurred in connection with this camp with the understanding that if a play er is contracted to a Pirate Or ganization Club, he will be re imbursed his reasonable actual expenses, AIMS FOR RECORD — Pro moter Bob Luce released fig ures today showing a sellout crowd of 51,200 fans for his Aug. 14 White Sox Park pro wrestling show would gross a new all-time U. S. record of $206,659.50. The present record for a pro fessional wrestling show held in the United States is $128, 071.74, set by the late Fred Kohler in this same ball park, June 30, 1961. Attendance was 34,955 according to Illinois State Athletic Commission records. Ironically Luce was working for Kohler at the time as his Pub lic Relations Director. Luce will have the wrestling ring on 2nd base, with the ring side comprising only 1200 seats at $12.50, all-time high for a pre-mat show. The first four rows of the up per and lower deck boxes will be priced at $10.00; the balance of box seats at $6.00 and the grandstand, upper and lower deck scaled at $4.50 each. Total reserved seating in the stands will comprise 17,916 of the park’s 50,000 permanent seats. The balance of 33,284 seats will be sold as general admission at $3.00 beginning two weeks before the show at White Sox Park. Feature bouts on the card are a tag-team match in the ring which will be surrounded by cyclone steel fencing so neither of the two teams gets out until there is a decision. The match pits The Bruiser and The Crush er against Butcher Vachon and Mad Dog Vachon. The co-feature pits current AWA World Champion Verne Gagne against Baron Von Raschke, who is undefeated in America and Europe. There will also be seven all-star support ing bouts.
