Residents Fear Violence from Italians and Ask for Protection. MEN DRIVE ENGINEER FROM PLANT. WIN Intimidated by a displasy of halves and other weapons in the hands of the strikers, residenta of Waarry appealed to Sheriff Willinger and his force for protection after the strikers had driven the engineer of the plant of the one Union Lime Co. from his post and threatened Grave Ufforders. MSherill Willinger with a deputy visited the scene late Wednesday night and remained Thursday until a settlement of the strike was oeady and the men returned to work at an increase of wages. Despite the threatening aspect of the situation there was no serious oathbreak. Refunl of the Union Cove immedi ately accede tow demand for a 2 cent Increase in the pay of Italian workmen to the quarries caused the strike. ‘The men gathered in number, muttering threats, and residents of the vicinity became alarmed and ap pealed to the sheriff. The presence of the officers appeared to have quieted the strikers and there was no attempt to cause trouble. Later the company compromised with the men and it is said consented to pay an Increase of 15 cents, giving $1.76 instead of Ld) per day to the workmen. Considerable trouble has been ex ploranced at the Quarry in the past with the Italian. And the people are unwilling to takee chances and called for protection. The strike is the great trouble at the quarries in some time and the action of the company in “ranting no increase in = believed on ‘have satisfied the men, Sheri Willinger returned from Quarry Thursday evening.
