| SOCIAL DEMOCRACY 1R THE GERM A.R ARMY.Tb«* Berlin correspondent of the Pall Mall Gazette writes : “ The German Govern men c, very seriously concerned at the dimensions which social democracy is assuming, lately proceeded with great energy and severity against social democratic societies and agitations. Even the Social Democratic Central Election Committee, which displayed ouosual activity, and had founded branches in all important manufacturing towns, is now officially dissolved. Social democratic meetings are strenuonsly watched over by police agents, and the slightest offensive reference to Crown or Government is a signal for their immediate suspension. Despite all precautions, thia , organisation daily increases in proportions, i and it would not be at all surprising if at the next election a sensible addition should be mado to its representatives in the Imperial Parliament. The complete stagnation of trade and industry, with a redaction of labor in all large manufactures, necewa rilj attended by the discharge of numerous workmen, gives snch an impetus to ihe alluring representations of thesocial democrats and their descriptions of socialism, that the people lend an onlj too willing ear. The important fact can also no longer be denied that the social democratic ictla-occe baa even extended to fcbo military. No particulars are known of tae extent of their operations among the noldiera, the authorities observing strict secrecy on the result of their inquiries. Bat that ssriona apprehensii in have been raised is proved by the stringent measures iasuid by the War Office with regard to any such movements ic the army. Domiciliary searches havo taken place in the barracks and lodgings of soldiers for social democratic newspapers and pamphlets, and any farther reudiug of su*h publications, an well as frequenting places in which these destructive principles are propagated, is strictly forbidden. It is questionable whether these prohibitive measuros will have any effect; for-general conscription calling every citizen without distinction of politics to serve in the aruiy cannot prevent «ociaf democrats being among the number. If ever in future an armed stinggle ensues in Prussia or Germeny between Government afid the lower classes of the people, aoch as hap-ponod in Paris daring the Commune, the social democrats will #bave considerable power in their hands through having served in the army when young, and gained an intimate acquaintance with the use of firearms. A revolution in Germany would be replete with the greatest dangers for the Government, us the revolutionists would only need good weapons to fight in good order.”
