. OBITUARY.Died,on Wednesday last, Israel Harding, Esq. At the time of his death, Mr. Harding was a candidate to represent' the whigs of this county in the next Legislature ; and, in our opinion, the present system of electioneering had a tendency to aggravate the constitutional debility which ended in his death. With Mr. Harding we had but little personal acquaintance. He was, however, considered by all who knew him, an hone6t man; and against his character as a man and a Christian, we never heard the slightest imputation. He has left a large circle of relatives to lament hie loss; but we hope their loss is his gain. There is a sublimity aswell as fear in death. To the good, death brings no terrors. Unconscious of guilt, they boldly confront the tyrant. “ The soldier on the buttle field, amid the roar of artillery and the shrieks of the dying, is not nerved with a higher courage, than is the humble mortal whose life has been pnssed in the vale of obscurity, in the firm discharge of the duties of the Christian.”To see the noble form, once redolent in health, lying cold and calm in the arms of the destroyer, awakens sensations to which we are at ordinary times a stranger. And it is, when in the contemplation of such scenes, that we reulize the language of the poet, that“ This world is all a fleeting show,For man’s illusion given,”and utter decay the late of ull sublunary things. The hopes of real enjoyment that we cherished furour earthly pilgrimage, vanish as “ snow flakes onthe river,” and the baubles we once loved, becomefollies and trifles in our eight. But death, thougha lofty, is still a melancholy theme. Why do weshudder to look beyond the tomb 1 Light heartedand gay, we love to gaze upon the varied beautiesof nature and drink in the sweets of life. Whythen, we ask, should we shudder at our inevitable!fate] Beyond the tomb, we know as little as olourselves previous to our existence. Let us all, then, be prepared for the great pay-day, whenNature's debt must be paid : and let us live, that |when called upon, our friends may say, “ our lossbut his gain.”
