50th Anniversary For Rhoades1Approximately 200 family members and friends attended a reception at the Westside Grange hall in observance of the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Chester R. Rhoades of this city.While hosts and hostesses for the event were the numerous nieces and nephews of the well known couple, the principal organizer was Mrs. Elmer H. Fox of Redding. Assisting her with decorations and food preparation were many family members.The couple greeted their well-wishers standing before a huge ruffled heart, flanked by baskets of pink and white gladioli. For the occasion, Mrs. Rhoades was attired in a rust colored nylon polyester dress accentuated with hand painted gold floral trim. Her accessories were a gold brooch and earrings set with pearls, and an orchid corsage, gifts from her husband.Tones of pink, gold and white dominated in the decor which featured streamers leading to cascading wedding bells, interlocking wedding rings, lace hearts, and lace-covered tables adorned with crystal candelabra and gold candles.The multi-tiered anniversary cake and two large side cakes, made and decorated by Mrs. Fox, featured delicate pink roses and gold leaves under a top that carried out the theme with a golden “50”. Assisting at the various tables were nieces of the couple, representing three generations. These were Mrs. Victor Hubbard, Salem, Ore.; Mrs. Garlin Gentry, Fresno; Miss Darlene Nelson, a great niece, of Sacramento; Mrs. Roy Bayles, Orland; Mrs. William Hopkins, Mrs. James Ebenhack, Mrs. Robert Wien, Red Bluff; Mrs. Art Calame, Sacramento’ Mrs. Leland Bayles, Vallejo. All were accompanied by their husbands or members of their families. Mrs. Kenneth Fox of Redding and Mrs. Ronald Fox of Red Bluff had charge of the commemmorative gifts.Highlights of the reception for Mrs. Rhoades included a meeting with one of her first pupils, Mrs, Ethleen (Irish) Hall of Redding and a reunion with a college friend and roommate, Mrs. Laurel (Johnston) Garber of Fair Oaks.Special guests were brothers and sisters of the honored couple, among them Mrs. Rhoades brothers and their wives, Miral Peterson of Red Bluff and Russell Peterson of Childs Meadows. Her eldest brother, Sardis, or Lodi was unable to attend. Brothers and sisters of Mr. Rhoades present, included P.E. Rhoades, Sacramento; Mr. and Mrs. Chris Rhoades, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Mr. and Mrs. Bayne Cross, Oakridge, Ore.; Mmes. May Morrison, Medford; Agnes White, Olive Eaton, Nina Messinger and Lena Allen, all Red Bluff.Other nieces and nephews, with members of their families,MR. AND MRS. CHESTER RHOADESBayles, Don and Susan, Glenn Bayles, Corning; William Hopkins and Brad, Dan Osborn, Allen and Neil, Red Bluff.the First Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Mrs. Rhoades, the former Leona Peterson, was a graduate of the old Normal School at Chico and taught for a few years in Tehama County. Rhoades was discharged in 1919 after service in World War I. The couple was married July 12, 1921 and first lived in Sacramento, where he was in the grocery business. In 1945 they returned to Red Bluff to care for her mother, Mrs.A pleasant surprise following the Sunday reception was to receive a message of congratulation from Rep. Harold “Bizz” Johnson with emblem and “congratulations” inscribed in gold.George Peterson, and this has been their home ever since. For a number of years prior to his retirement, Rhoades was an employe at the Red Bluff Post Office. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades are active members ofLEFT-OVER FISH Use leftover cooked fish for a first-course. Add seafood to it if you like and dress with cocktail sauce. For the cocktail sauce you can use a ready-prepared mixture or make one yourself by) combing chili sauce, mayonnaise, lemon juice and horseradish.
