BYJOSIAH I)OAR.DOWN SY THE SEA!SCRAPS OF INTERESTINGNEWS FROM THE BEACHWhat the Editor Find to WriteAbout on Pawley's Island.W inyah Cottages, Pawley’s Island,July 10, 1807I was asked not to mention the fact that several persons came near drowning last week, but as the matter is now being generally discussed, I think it not inappropriate to refer to it. It seems tiiat little Hettie Sampson got beyond her depth, when Albert Springs, Jr , a young Lachicotte, and Lou and Ehrich went to her assistanceand all came near being drowned. Mr. Ehrich was in bathing at the time, but as he could notswim, rendered no assistance. These young hoys, in trying to save Miss Hettie. took cramp and became exhausted, although they continued to make heroic efforts to aid the littlelady. Fortunately a fishing boat had just landed on the beach, and the crowd, under Mr. Ehrich’s guidance, succeeded in reaching the entire party and rescuing them just in the nick of time. About thesame time, Mr. W. A. James had a similar experience with a party of ladies a little lower down the beach. He succeededadmirably in rescuing them butonly after great exertion. People who witnessed these efforts to save life say it was wonderful how cool and collected they all were, and Mr. James and these young boys deserve great praise for their noble work, inwhich they came near losing their lives.
