One of the lumber wagons of F. B. Tait Co. was at the east end of the factory building while some goods were about to be Joaded into it from the second story. A team of draft hcrBes 4was hitched to the wagon and John Shield?, the driver, stood at their heads. He was bolding the horses by thebite, and was Btanding directly in front and between tbe horses. All the time Shields waa banging onto tbe bridles and doing all in his power to stop the horses. He was being dragged on hia back and could cot see with what the team woe likely to collide. Fearing that in the collision the wagon tongue would give him hia quietus, Shields loosened hiB grip on the bridles and fell upon hie back an the sidewalk. Fortunately neither of the plunging * animate struck him, but one of the wagon wheete passed over his leg. Shields had }jat dropped out of tbe way after being draggoa the length of a block, when the wagon tongue struck a tree, bringing tbe runaways to a sudden halt and making a small wreck of the wagon. If Shields had huog on for another three seconds he would have been killed. He escaped with a few bruises. '
